My partner and I visited Berlin in January 2019 and in this post I want to share my top things to do in Berlin in three days.
Berlin is a beautiful city with many historic and artistic places to visit. Although I believe it is beautiful during the summer, I think it is perfect for a winter getaway for two reasons: it is cheaper and less crowded. In addition to this, despite of the short period of time you are travelling, it is possible to see the main things.
Day 1
1) Alexa Shopping Centre. This shopping centre is very accessible if you are staying in Mitte district which is basically the city centre of Berlin. This shopping centre has three floors with so many shops that you can get lost and it has also a nice food court. If you are a shopaholic, I totally recommend going to this shopping centre.
2) Berlin Cathedral. We stayed in the Radisson Blu Hotel and AquaDom so we were quite lucky to have the cathedral next to us. You can tell by the pictures that its architecture is impressive, however, being there is even better. Personally, this was the most beautiful building in Berlin for me. In addition to this, if you travel in January, you can see all the beautiful little lights they put on the trees close to the cathedral.
3) TV Tower. The TV tower is huge and it is very impressive to look at it. You may think it is not that tall, however, the closer you get, the bigger it seems. We did not have the chance to go inside since it was very foggy and cloudy. If you go inside you can enjoy amazing views and have some dinner.
Day 2
1) Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It looks like a maze which really surprised me. You can find it just in the middle of a normal neighbourhood, however, the place itself is full of history.
2) Mall of Berlin. This is the most popular shopping centre in Berlin and this due to the fact that is the biggest. The shopping centre is divided in two buildings with several floors each. You can find any brand you like in this one (from Zara to Guess.) If you love shopping centres, this is the one you can´t miss!
3) Brandenburg Gate. This building is one of the most popular and instragramable places in Berlin. The arch is stunning and you are going to expect many people taking pictures at any time. Although it is beautiful during the day, I like it the most during the night because it is magical to see it with the lights on.
4) Victory Column. This is another popular monument in Berlin. It is 20 min walking distance from the Brandenburg Gate. The column is 67 metres tall and on the top you can see the golden Angel. It is beautiful moment full of history and very worthy to see. You can go to the top and enjoy Berlin views, or if you don´t like heights, walking through the underground passage directly to the Victory Column is amazing.
Day 3
1) East Side Gallery. The contribution of so many creative artists made this gallery possible. Whether you are passionate about contemporary art or not, it is just beautiful to walk and see all the different paintings and the messages behind them. Here is where you can find the famous “The Kiss” painting which illustrates Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev giving the East Germany President Erich Honecker a kiss. If you want to take a picture, you will have to queue for sure!
2) Oberbaum Bridge. This bridge, located at the end of the East Side Gallery, is full of history because it was used to be a border crossing. It is beautiful to see how the train passes and the river scenery you get! I loved it because it made me feel I was in a different period of time.
I have put this city guide together considering the places that are next to each other and the length of the journey. We arrived to Berlin in a Saturday afternoon and we left on a Monday evening and I am sure we could have seen more things but we like taking our time seeing the places. In addition to this, we did not use any public transport (with the exception of travelling from the airport to Berlin city centre.)
I hope this is city guide is helpful and let me know if you would include any other place you wouldn´t miss.
P.S. if you are interested in places to eat, please have a look at my restaurant reviews.
